Due to its position surrounded by water, Mexico exports a number of different fish species. The majority are small bait-fish like herrings, sardines and anchovies since they are so prevalent in the shallow waters surrounding the country. Larger fish are not exported as much, though the most commonly exported species is tuna. Mexico has annually exported between 1 million and 1.5 million tonnes of fish to many surrounding nations including the United States.
