Great question, mcmillan. The debris in space is mostly from rocket material and satellites that are no longer in use. For example, paint flakes and solid rocket fuel slag.
There are many satellites that have stopped working or ran their course and are then just let float freely without anyone tracking them. They then become part of the aurora of space trash that floats around earth. This link has an amazing image of the earth surrounded by space trash. Also contributing to space trash is first and second stage rocket motors that didn’t burn up in the atmosphere but made it into space.
