Most rubber bands today are not made from natural rubber from rubber trees, but rather from industrially produced synthetic rubber. Synthetic rubber is produced by mixing petroleum with soapsuds and a few other chemicals. The mixture then dries into a chunk where it is later melted down into a gel and molded into various shapes, including rubber bands.
