The answer to this question of course depends on where the disaster occurs, and at what period of time. Obviously a hurricane or earthquake will cause more damage now than it would 300 years ago. To date the most expensive natural disasters have been Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Ike. FEMA data indicates that hurricanes have in fact been the most expensive natural disasters in US history, basically because they occur more often. Additionally, the combination of wind and flooding causes more damage than does any other natural force, according to FEMA.
