As of today, New York City is testing LED lightbulbs and they’re currently deciding whether or not they are going to replace their city’s light bulbs with them. It depends on the city you live in, though. Different cities have different budgets and their local governements have different opinions about what their city should use.
In general, streetlights are usually use high intensity discharge lamps, often high pressure sodium lamps (HPS). Such lamps provide the greatest amount of photopic illumination for the least consumption of electricity. “However, when scotopic/photopic light calculations are used, it can been seen how inappropriate HPS lamps are for night lighting.”
