Using rapidly renewable plant materials like bamboo and straw is considered to be environmentally conscious, as well as using lumber from sustainably managed forests, stone, recycled metal, recycled industrial materials (sand, demolition debris), and any other salvaged, recycled, or reused materials.
The types of building materials that are best for the environment are ones that are naturally occurring in the environment that the building is constructed in. The use of locally sourced materials reduces transportation and therefore the use of fossil fuels. Additionally, the use of naturally occurring local materials will allow for the many of the materials to be recycled back into the environment at the end of the useful life of the building without harming the ecosystem.
