What kinds of bacteria are in drinking water?

Our drinking water may become contaminated with bacteria such as coliform if there is a problem with the water treatment system or the pipes used to distribute the water. Water in the United States is regularly checked for coliform bacteria; the three different groups of coliform bacteria found in water are total coliform, fecal coliform, and E. coli.
