Several animals have been known to eat bamboo if it is readily available. Bamboo is rich in nutrients and it is a renewable food source. Many types of primates will eat bamboo if they find it, including the mountain gorilla. Some people even eat bamboo as a food source, and yes, humans are mammals. The most prominent eaters of bamboo are the giant and red pandas. In fact, bamboo accounts for the vast majority of their diet. Just one giant panda can eat more than 4,500 kg (9,920 lbs) of bamboo in one year.
There are about 1,000 species of bamboo in temperate and tropical countries. Asia holds many of them. It is the fastest growing woody plant.
