What kind of wood should I avoid buying at the stores?

If possible you should avoid buying tropical hardwoods. These are typically harvested from the rainforests. Since the harvesting of these types of woods leads to the depletion of irreplaceable habitats and the invaluable resource of the rainforest one should try to find alternatives at the store. These to be avoided woods include Mahogany, Brazilian Cherry, and Brazilian Walnut.

Also avoid buying bigger wood in general, such as 12 x 12 beams. The thicker the cross-section, the older the wood, and the harder it is to replace. If you need a 12 x 12, use four 4 x 4s together.
