The island are made up of volcanic basalt. This can be very fluid or viscous (sticky and slow). This makes the soil very rich and the land very dynamic.
Just some extra Hawaii trivia for you: Did you know that only one volcano made all the islands, and that the volcano stays in the same place? The reason the islands are in a chain is that the tectonic plate that the ocean rests on moves -far too slowly for humans to see- over the volcano underneath, in the Earth’s mantle. So, over millions of years as the plate moved over the hot spot, a chain of islands formed from volcanic material.
