A pumpkin is a type of squash. Other types of squash are zucchini, summer and winter squash, and gourds. The pumpkin also has gourd-like qualities.
The pumpkin belongs to the cucurbitaceae – or cucurbit – family. Cucumbers and melons also belong in this plant group. Additionally, pumpkins aren’t vegetables, but rather fruits, due to the fact that they have seeds.
