Toxins typically refer to anything potentially harmful to the human body like waste product from including ammonia, lactic acid, homosysteine and other human made toxins.
Champions of detox dieting believe that toxins like air pollution, alcohol, caffeine, pesticides and refined or artificial sweeteners are stored in the body and cause certain chronic conditions such as headaches and fatigue. They advocate the elimination of these toxins through occasional cleansing diets.
The necessity of participating in a cleanse is, however, debatable. Many medical doctors point out that the kidneys, liver and GI track already regularly filter and eliminate toxins from the body.
