It sounds like you are describing an Eastern Gray Squirrel. These squirrels are native to the eastern parts of North America
Those squirrels are simply called Grey Squirrels or Eastern Gray Squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) depending on the region. They are native to the eastern and midwestern United States and to the southerly portions of the eastern provinces of Canada.
As they said above, the squirrel you are probably describing is the Eastern Gray Squirrel. They are native to areas east of the Mississippi River, covering a large portion of the eastern United States. They are commonly seen by humans, and are abundant in population. They only live about 11 months to a year commonly, however, but some have been known to live for up to 10 years. On average, they tend to be about 473 millimeters in length, and grow to be about 520 grams in weight. Eastern Grey Squirrels are also known as the Cat Squirrel and the Migratory Squirrel.
