What kind of soil is good for growing pumpkins?

The soil best suited for growing healthy pumpkins contains organic matter. Add two to five yards per plant of compost and rotted manures in the fall/early spring. Cow and horse manures are best. Chicken manure should be used sparingly and only in the fall. The soil pH should be between 6.5 and 6.8.
