Sedimentary rocks have the most layers, as they are formed by sediments piling on top of each other and forming together over time. They contain important information on the history of the earth and their layers can give geologists these answers.
Are fossils found in sedimentary rocks?
Metamorphic rocks typically have layers, just as much as sedimentary rocks. The “number” of layers is somewhat subjective, not absolutely defined, and is open-ended; there is no rock that has “the most” layers.
Having said that, varves, relatively thin annual sedimentary layers, can comprise great number of distinct layers.
