In order to finance their interncontinental high-speed rail system, China is asking countries to give away some of their natural resources to them. Chinese officials stated, “We would actually prefer the other countries to pay in natural resources than make their own capital investment” (quoted in the second link). There are 17 countries negotiating this deal with China at the moment. However, the only deal that that has been announced (at least, the only deal I could find) is Myanmar’s (Burma) agreement to exchange lithium. Perhaps once more negotiations become finalized, we will know what other countries will exchange.
