According to the Department of Energy, research is being done to improve the cost and efficiency of carbon capture technologies. The first is revolutionary improvements in carbon dioxide separation and capture technologies. This means new physical and chemical materials for absorption and adsorption, micro-channel processing with rapid kinetics, carbon dioxide hydrate formation, and oxygen-enhanced combustion methods. The second area of research is the development of retrofittable carbon dioxide capture and separation modifications for existing point sources. The last area of research is the integration of carbon capture technology with advanced power cycles and technologies and with environmental control technologies for criteria pollutants.
