What kind of research are the Japanese doing with the whales?

    Japan is a member of the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling (ICRW). Contracting parties have an unrestricted right to study whales for scientific research. Scientific research includes the study of the number of whales, age composition, sex ratio, natural mortality rates, growth rates, reproductive rates, etc. The scientific research includes conducting surveys and collecting whale specimens such as the ovaries.
