Originally, the Golden Gate bridge was painted with orange vermillion lead paint.  Impending corrosion sparked a movement to remove the original paint and to replace it with an inorganic zinc silicate primer and an acrylic emulsion topcoat.  The primer was later replaced in the 1980’s with a water-borne inorganic zinc primer.
