Petroleum is used to make plastics. Here is the basic process in the making of plastic: Petroleum is mined and transported to the refinery. The crude oil is refined into the general forms, and for plastics ethane and propane. This ethane and propane are put through high temperatures to produce ethylene and propylene. A catalyst is added to proudce a “fluff” like polymer. This polymer is combined with other materials, then melted and cut up into pellets. These pellets are shipped to manufacturers which use blow molding to make the plastics.
Significant volumes of plastic, such as that used to make grocery bags, uses natural gas as its primary feedstock material rather than oil.
