Propane tanks are usually made from aluminum, as it is a light-weight and strong metal. They are also made from steel or sometimes fiberglass, which is not a metal, but is lighter and often cheaper than aluminum. Be advised: it is illegal in some areas to fill fiberglass tanks.
It would seem from my research that most propane tanks are made from steel. While it’s heavy, steel is tough, durable, and cheap. There are also aluminum cylinders available, which probably weigh much less, but are more expensive. I’ve been seeing some ads for fiberglass cylinders recently, which is really interesting. They must be very light tanks!
