Vertical farms are farms inside of a large building or what is known as a farmscraper. They are like multi-layered greenhouses and are a proposed solution to getting food to cities, decreasing the distance traveled by food, and decreasing the amount of land used for farming. They will be irrigated with sanitized waste water, which cities have lots of but cannot use for anything.
Vertical farms use an irrigation system called Hydroponics. The plants grow in a simple medium such as gravel or perlite then are watered with water that contains all the minerals and nutrients the plants need to thrive. This watering system reuses water, is often organic and can be easily tailored to fit different crops.
