What kind of impacts on the numbers of whales in the world does whaling in Japan have?

The link below has a chart of ‘legal’ special permit catches of whales by the Japanese since 1986.  In recent years, they have been killing close to 1,000 whales a year, these numbers do not include pirate whaling however.

On the second linked website, it states that Japan has a license to kill 935 Minke Whales, 50 Humpback whales, and 50 fin whales per year for ‘scientific research”.
