The herbivorous giant “kangaroo” (which includes three species: Protemnon anak, Metasthenurus newtonae and Simosthenurus occidentalis) has not been around for around 41,000 years and was likely wiped out by climate change and early human settlers of Tasmania. Its habitat was probably wet and full of vegetation, though also increasingly arid towards the end of the Pleistocene epoch (which ended about 10,000 years ago).
