Burping is usually caused by swallowing air when eating or drinking. The air stays in your stomach until you are full and it is then expelled which contains mostly oxygen, but can include nitrogen. If a burp occurs due to the drinking of a carbonated drink, the gas expelled from your body is carbon dioxide.
