Earthworms usually feed on organic matter in the soil. This includes decaying plant matter and the leaf litter layer in forests. Depending on the species, they will also eat soil bacteria, fungi, nematodes, protozoa and decaying animal remains. A recent study also finds that some earthworms (Lumbricus terrestris in particular) will feed on live seeds and seedlings.
