Perhaps the quickest breeding flies in the animal kingdom are matflies, members of the order Ephemeroptera, which is Greek for ‘short lived wings’. These flies, most of which are aquatic, usually live no longer than a few hours at most. Most simply emerge from their eggs solely to reproduce, and then die shortly after. There are amazing displays of these mayflies in Africa, on Lake Victoria, where columns of mating flies hundreds of feet high have been seen for centuries.
