The Titanic was equipped with a system of two triple expansion steam engines. Each of these was about the size of a 2 story house. The engines would create steam by burning coal then recycle the steam through a system of pistons to get the maximum economy of energy from the steam. It was not the most cutting edge technology at the time, but it was proven to be a reliable system.
