Water can be contaminated in a variety of ways including sewage, agricultural runoff, human waste, and industrial waste. If you drink water contaminated with pathogenic micro-organisms, you are at risk for anything from botulism to dysentery to cholera, depending what the water is contaminated with. Check out the chart on the website below to see which diseases are related to which kind of contamination.
People can get diarrhea, arsenicosis, cholera, fluorosis, Guinea worm disease, malaria, schistosomiasis, and typhoid fever from contaminated water. Schistosomiasis is a disease caused by parasitic worms that penetrate skin when people swim in, bathe, or wash in contaminated water. The disease can lead to infection and can result in liver, intestine, lung, and bladder damage.
People can get Guinea worm disease by drinking water contaminated by Dracunculus larvae. The larvae turn into worms and cause ulcers.
