Traditionally, landfill covering materials where chosen for their impermeability. Thus covers of compacted clay have been the standard landfill covering since the 1970’s. Recently there have been experiments with alternative landfill covers that absorb and release moisture from the atmosphere (ET, or evaporation and transpiration covers); these are made with more permeable soil and mulch like materials.
