Sand, silt or clay are the three types of soil (http://garden.lovetoknow. com/wiki/Slideshow:Types_of_Soil), and the quick answer is a “rich, sandy loam” for most plants.
But it really all depends on what you’re trying to grow, so the real answer is to decide what you’re putting in the soil and then find out what soil you’ve got.
First, you have to test your soil to see what you’re dealing with, with a home testing kit. While you may know the texture (sandy, loamy, etc.) the pH level of your soil is also a critical factor.
Using outdoor soil for an indoor plant is a bad idea; its got bacteria that will kill the plant. You can sterilize it (in an oven at 180 degrees for 30 minutes), if you choose to not just buy some indoor soil from a hardware store.
