It depends on what you like in your sunset, but I think that no clouds give you the best sunset. The best sunsets that I have seen around Yellowstone are generated by smoke. Forest fires give out a lot of smoke that make some really cool red and orange sunsets.
I think that some cumulus clouds up high and a few stratus clouds a bit lower make the best sunset; I always feel that the sun reflecting off them makes for a greater array of colors and gives them a magical glowing effect. Of course, if the clouds are too low, the sun won’t shine through, so mid-levels clouds are best–alto-stratus or alto-cumulus are recommended by those who photograph sunsets.
