The Department of Energy has green technology grants to fund factories and create green jobs. They hope to use the Detroit skilled automotive labor force to integrate electric and hybrid car technology into the mainstream US auto industry. Michigan has already created 22,000 clean tech jobs in 2007 and this will help to create more. Detroit has been ranked as one of the top five cities to live in for clean energy jobs.
With Detroit facing a 22% unemployment rate, it definitely needs green jobs to reboot the economy. The question comes down to whether or not consumers will accept their new output. The Obama administration expects to get 1 million electric cars into the market by 2015, but it is up to consumers to buy those cars and get the economy back in action (as well as do some good for the environment).
