The production of cocoa mirrors that of coffee: it is a shade loving crop that has been bred to survive in monoculture, full-sun production systems, which are detrimental to the rainforest and everything in it. Thus, although there is not one type of chocolate that can be named as specifically worse than others, it is important to choose Rainforest Alliance certified cocoa products, which are typically fair trade and more ecologically produced.
Well, apparentely Nestle produces its chocolate using palm oil which is obtained – per Greenpeace – through rainforest destruction. They actually made quite an arresting yet humorous video on the matter which you can watch through this link as well.
