It may be a bit of a myth that tequila is made from a cactus, but I think you might be referring to the blue agave plant, a plant found in Jalisco at high altitudes in sandy soil. This is one of the primary ingredients that goes into the manufacture of tequila, found in arid environments, but is not actually a cactus.
