What kind of building puts off the most carbon?

Residential, commercial….

In general, larger buildings emit the most carbon because they require far more electricity, and energy for heating and cooling. They also required the most building materials and construction energy. By this logic, commercial buildings, especially skyscrapers, are the worst offenders. Even worse than these, however, are factories where goods are produced. The smokestacks you see coming from them are a heavy source of CO2, as well as sulfur and other particles that cause smog.
