An albatross is a very large seabird. One species of albatross, the great albatross, has the longest wingspan of birds. Albatross are known for their ability as gliders and have long, narrow winds that allow them to remain aloft for long periods of time. There are about 20 species of albatross (in the family diomedeidae), 19 of which are threatened. They can have wingspans of up to 25 feet, live to be 85 years old and they mate for life. Most species are found in Southern oceans.
