Due to the excrement being both urine and feces, there is a high level of nitrogen that for most humans smells of ammonia (NH3). There is also the release of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) that has many effects on humans and the environment. Long term exposure to both chemicals causes degradation of the nasal passages and loss of smell.
