What kept the buffalo from going extinct?

Many species are able to escape extinction because they adapt to the new conditions. They often have broader eating habits as opposed to stenophagous species that can only survive from one type of food. They can also survive in larger geographic ranges and environmental conditions. Most importantly though, these species are able to quickly and effectively reproduce. These can be reasons why the buffalo are not extinct.
