Hyrdroelectric power is in widespread use, where available. Washington State has the cheapest electricity in the country, due to its large implication of hydroelectric power. It actually gained its popularity through the middle part of the 20th Century, and has since fallen off due to environmental concerns. Hydroelectric dams cause serious devestation to the ecosystem of the rivers they utilize. The Columbia River only boast 3% of its once famous salmon runs, mostly due to over 400 dams blocking up the river. Because of environmental concerns such as this, there has not been a federal grant for a hydroelectric facility in the U.S. since the 1980’s.
