K2 is considered the second highest mountain on Earth, after Everest. It’s part of the Karakoram Range along the border of China and Pakistan.
K2 has an elevation of 28,253 feet, and was named for being the second mountain listed by surveyor T.G. Montgomerie in the Kakakoram Range.
K2 is part of the Karkoram Range and is located on the border between the Taxkorgan Tajik Autonomous County of Xinjiang, China and Giligt, in Gilgit-Balistan of Pakistan. K2 is also known as Savage Mountain due to the difficulty of the ascent and the 2nd highest fatality among the eight thousanders for those who climb it. For every four people who have reached the summit, one has died trying. The first serous attempt to climb K2 was undertaken in 1902 by Oscar Eckenstein and Aleister Crowley, via the Northeast Ridge. After five serious and costly attempts, the team could only reach up to 21,407 feet. The failures were a combination of questionable physical training, personality conflicts, and poor weather conditions. The first successful ascension was by an italian team led by Ardito Desio on July 31, 1954. The first woman to reach the summit was Wanda Rutkiewicz of Poland in 1986.
