The jayhawk is a mythical bird that was invented as early as 1848. It’s name is derived from a combination of two birds (the blue jay and a sparrow hawk) and is said to represent something that is not to be trusted. The term was used in the Civil War to represent a patriotic individual and grew to become a mascot for Kansas University.
