An ion is an atom or molecule that has gained an electrical charge, either negative or positive by way of losing or gaining an electron. In a stable isotope, the atoms charges balance one another. For example, non-ionic carbon atom would have six protons and six electrons where as a negatively charged carbon ion could have six protons and seven electrons, giving it a net negative charge.
An ion is formed when an element has lost or gained electrons to form a full outer energy shell so that it can become stable. If it has given some away it is a positive ion and if it has gained electrons it is negative.
