    There are a variety of insects that can decompose matter. Generally, they vary depending on the level of decomposition. They include Acari, Aranea, Diptera, and many more. Check out the citation attached for a full list.

    There are a number of insects that are used in the composting process to help to break down the amount of food waste. The bugs are usually viewed as a reason for concern, when in fact they help. Insects such as:

    • Vinegar Flies (fruit flies)
    • Black Soldier Fly maggots (which indicate the presence of meat or fat, which should not be added to your composting bin in the first place)
    • Arthropods, like collembola and sowbugs
    • Earthworms
    • Nematodes
