Agriculture seems a likely candidate. Excessive irrigation may drain underground aquifers and can cause water pollution. When too many nutrients collect in a single body of water, a process called eutrophication may occur, which is when algae and other small organisms grow too densely and too quickly, affecting the entire microecosystem. Infamously, there’s an inevitable amount of pesticide runoff into the water system, as well.
