What is hydrofracking?

Hydrofracking is short for hydraulic fracturing, a controversial process in the US and especially in the state of New York.   The process of hydrofracking is used by gas and oil companies to obtain natural gas from thousands of feet below the Earth’s surface.  Small fractures are made in rock or coal formations so oil and gas is free to move through the fractures to the production well.  Water and sand or pebbles are injected into the fractures until the liquid is forced out.  The diagram below is very helpful in visualizing this process of “hydrofracking”.
