    Also known as hydrofracking, is the process of drilling deep into a layer of rock or sediment (often marcellus shale) and pumping liquid at high pressure into the resulting fissures, with the goal of extracting natural gas which is trapped there. The process can yield natural gas and petroleum reserves that were once unnatainable, but the process is highly controversial.
