In the United States there have been several devastating hurricanes in recent years. The only category-5 (catastrophic) hurricane to hit the U.S. in the last quarter century is hurricane Andrew in 1992 which tore through Homestead, Florida. Even though the storm itself was not quite as powerful, Hurricane Katrina in 2005 stands as one of the most destructive natural disasters in American history, in terms of loss of life, destruction of property, and economic cost. New Orleans got the brunt of the storm as it was razed to the ground, and between Mississippi and Louisiana over 1,200 people died. In 1989, Hurricane Hugo devastated South Carolina. Additionally, Ivan in 2004 ripped through Florida, and Rita in 2005 caused immense amounts of damage in Louisiana and Texas.
