It is fertilizer made from composted human feces and urine, which returns nitrogen back to the soil. Humanure can be microbiologically safe if properly composted (mixed with carbon containing material such as leaves or sawdust) at high temperatures to kill pathogens.
Humanure is human waste that can be returned to the environment once it has decomposed sufficiently to remove pathogen and fecal matter. Humanure toilets have been used as an alternative to conventional human waste treatment. The rationale is that human waste contains nitrogen which is a key nutrient for plant growth and conventional waste treatment is much more energy intensive than composting. A concern is the spread of pathogens if the waste is not contained and decomposed sufficiently.
