Desertification is largely caused by overgrazing. The rapid consumption of natural grasslands results in topsoil erosion, leaving the soil unable to support any further vegetation growth. Thus uncontrolled livestock without regular grazing area rotation in regions with sparse vegetation (such as sub saharan africa) is a major cause of desertification.
The root causes of desertification are mainly related to man’s overexploitation of the environment. They are principally caused by overgrazing, overdrafting, of water and diversion of water from rivers for human consumption and industrial use. Increased population and livestock abuse on the land has accelerated desertification.
